Electrolytic polishing or electropolishing is an electrochemical process that removes metal (ion by ion) from the item surface. The process leaves a bright, clean and microscopically smooth surface finish.

Electropolishing is non-mechanical process, as a result electropolished surfaces greatly distinct from surfaced treated with harsh abrasives.

Electropolishing process

In this process the metal item serves as anode (‘+’ charged). The metal item is connected to the positive terminal of a DC power rectifier. The cathode (‘-’ charged), is connected to the negative terminal of the DC power rectifier.

Both anode and cathode are immersed in a temperature-controlled tank filled with electrolyte. Typically, it is a mixture of sulfuric acid and phosphoric acid. Electrical current from the rectifier is conducted from the anode to the cathode through the electrolyte. Electrical current  causes  metal ions oxidise and dissolves into the electrolyte.

In electropolishing, burrs and other protruding portions of metal surface attract greater electrical current density and are smoothened first causing microscopically even surface finish.

  • is useful for polishing and deburring parts that are fragile or have complex geometries,
  • replaces traditional mechanical finishing techniques,
  • does not deform, damage nor scratch the treated surface,
  • cleans and smooths steel surface of an item improving its functionality and external look.
